Biography



Hua Nian is a Chinese-born artist and educator whose professional background bridges photojournalism, art education, and studio practice. Before relocating to the United States, she taught photojournalism at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. She later earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from Pittsburg State University in Kansas.

Now based in Champaign–Urbana, Illinois, Hua Nian is an active exhibiting artist and art instructor whose work is represented in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States.

Her paintings have been exhibited widely in both national and international venues and have received awards at the local, state, and national levels. Her work has been featured and discussed in American Artist Magazine, the Chicago Sun-TimesDialogue: An Art Journal, and in numerous American and Chinese newspapers and periodicals.

In addition to gallery exhibitions, Hua Nian’s artwork has been commissioned and reproduced as cover imagery for books, music CDs, and posters by institutions including Stanford University and the University of Illinois. Most recently, her work was featured on the newly released album by the Jupiter String Quartet.

She is married to composer Stephen Taylor, and together they have two adult children engaged in scientific research focused on bees and birds.
