About the Instructor

Hua Nian was born and raised in China and later earned a Master’s degree in Art Education from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. For more than three decades, she has dedicated herself to teaching art to children through seasonal classes and summer art camps. Her approach to instruction emphasizes disciplined practice, creative exploration, and the cultivation of confidence, encouraging each student to develop an individual artistic voice.

In addition to her teaching career, Hua Nian maintains an active studio practice. Her paintings have been exhibited extensively in national and international venues and have received recognition through numerous local, state, and national awards. Her work has been featured and discussed in American Artist Magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times, Dialogue: An Art Journal, and a wide range of American and Chinese newspapers and periodicals.

Her artwork has also been commissioned and reproduced for book covers, music CDs, and posters by institutions including Stanford University and the University of Illinois. Most recently, her work was featured on a newly released album by the Jupiter String Quartet.

Hua Nian is married to composer Stephen Taylor. Together they have two adult children whose scientific research focuses on bees and birds.
